Exploring the World of Linguistics
On Wednesday, 12 June 2024, the SAVANT team and the Linguistics Department at Queen Mary University of London hosted an exciting Experimental Linguistics Taster Day for A-level English Language students from Leyton Sixth Form College. This event provided an in-depth look at how linguists study language and its fascinating intersection with psychology and sociology.
Event Highlights:
- Introduction to Linguistics: Students explored how linguists approach the study of language and its application across various fields, from policing to medical research.
- Hands-on Lab Experiences: Attendees had the opportunity to try out lab equipment used in linguistic research, including eye tracking, ultrasound visualisation, and neuroimaging.
- Language Data and Methods: Workshops covered different methods and data in linguistics, providing students with valuable insights they could apply to their Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) and independent studies.
- Campus Tour: Students enjoyed a guided tour of the Queen Mary campus, led by Student Ambassadors.
- Community Engagement: The day concluded with a session where students met with current and former students to learn about university life and career opportunities with a degree in English Language and Linguistics.

- 10:10 – 11:00: Taster lecture on the fundamentals of linguistics and its connection to A-level studies.
- 11:00 – 11:30: Workshop on methods and data in linguistics, focusing on practical applications for EPQs.
- 11:30 – 13:15: Campus tour ending at The Curve, followed by lunch at the university canteen.
- 13:30 – 15:00: In-lab sessions offering hands-on experience in various linguistic research techniques.
- 15:10 – 15:30: Insight into studying linguistics and English Language at university, and potential career paths.
- 15:30 – 16:00: Q&A session with current students and closing remarks.
